Golden opportunity for emerging artists

At 5 p.m. Thursday, April 5, local businesses in downtown Bay City will open their doors to the public, all in the name of art.

The event is a gallery walk, called First Thursdays. The walk is a monthly happening that got its start in 2005.

April’s walk is unique in that it will focus on students, faculty and alumni of SVSU.

Avram Golden, owner of Golden Gallery and Custom Framing, is looking for poets, fine artists and musicians to showcase their talents.

Because he wants the submission process easy as possible for inexperienced artists, he will not require  frames or mats on submitted artwork. Although, Golden said, it is ideal to have art ready to hang.

New club shoots to reel in aspiring filmmakers

Cardinal Filmmakers offers skills difficult to come across in the classroom, but pay off after graduation.

Tim Kenyon, English professor and adviser to Cardinal filmmakers, said he believes that filmmaking is underrepresented at SVSU.

There are few courses devoted to the subject. Kenyon said that he trusts the group will help fill the void.

The state of Michigan offers tax breaks for anyone who creates a film in this state.

Tax breaks could mean job opportunities for graduates.

Kenyon said he believes that learning to make film is valuable for graduates entering the job market.

The group will expose members to the art of filmmaking as well as teach them critical techniques.
