Board of control approves 20th charter school

The Board of Control voted Monday to approve a three-year charter for Hinoki International School, Michigan’s first dual-immersion Japanese-English school.

Based in metro Detroit, Hinoki International School is the 20th charter school currently authorized by SVSU.

Dual-immersion programs are meant to offer a bilingual experience to young students when their minds are developmentally best able to acquire a second language.

Hinoki International School is one of only a few in the United States to teach all subjects in English and Japanese.

It opened in 2010 as a charter school authorized by Livonia Public Schools, with 14 students in its single kindergarten classroom. By the 2013-2014 school year, its student body had expanded to 130.

However, the Livonia Board of Education … Read More…

Finishing the fight

Masked vigilantes and costumed heroes joined forces at the 2015 Relay for Life of SVSU and raised $43,712.04 to fight back against “the world’s most notorious villain”: cancer.

About $23,000 had been raised before the event began.

The rest was raised between 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, and 4 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

A staple at Relay for Life events, the Luminaria Ceremony allows participants and donors to remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those battling the disease by dedicating luminaria bags. During SVSU’s ceremomy, the bags were replaced with glow sticks and illuminated after dark.

With close to 1,000 participants, the event was hosted by SVSU’s chapter of Colleges Against Cancer in … Read More…

Designing healthier way to manage stress

Just in time for midterms, Active Minds hosted ‘Paint Your Stress Away,’ an event where students learned proactive ways to deal with stress and put their personal touches on unfinished pottery pieces.

Active Minds, a student organization devoted to educating people about mental health and combating stigmas associated with mental illnesses, partnered with Painterly Pottery.

Located in the Alumni Lounge on Thursday, Feb. 19, the event allowed students to choose a mug and paint colors and supplied them with water and paintbrushes. From there, students … Read More…

Alcohol permit classes offered monthly

Classes required to obtain an alcohol permit are now offered only once per month.

Director of Residential Life Michele Gunkelman said these will be replacing biannual classes offered in August and January.

“It was just a quick 10-minute educational class,” Gunkelman said. “We wanted to demystify alcohol for our students and validate their IDs.”

However, Gunkelman said many students chose not to participate and, instead, would arrive individually at Peer Health Education and Residential Life offices to take the class.

“It was taking us away from other projects,” Gunkelman said. “We really didn’t have a structure before. Now with monthly classes, we are being more efficient with resources and time.”

Associate Director of Residential Life Eltaro Hooper explained the inefficiency … Read More…

Cardinals set sights on championship-caliber season

During the offseason, SVSU softball coach Todd Buckingham and his coaching staff printed T-shirts for their players that said “OKC.” This is because this year’s World Series is being played in Oklahoma City, and the staff wants the players to know what the expectations are for the team: a championship.

“We looked at the talent that we have coming back and the talent that we have coming in, and we wanted to make sure that everyone in the program knew that (a championship) was going to be our mindset when we practice and when we train,” Buckingham said. “That is our goal, and that is what we want to strive for.

Seniors swing for strong start

Last year, the SVSU men’s baseball team finished 21-25 overall with a 16-16 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

When former coach Walt Head resigned midway through the season, Chris Ebright took over as interim head coach of a club sitting at 9-18 and the team just started winning. After a 12-7 finish to the year, the Cardinals finished third in the GLIAC tournament. Looking forward to this season, Ebright expects the success at the end of last year to carry over to 2015.

“The kids have all bought into our approach,” he said. “I think we’re building off from the run at the end of last year, and the kids are excited because they know that … Read More…

Theatre department brings Shakespearean drama to life

Shakespeare’s tragedy “Othello” came to the stage this past week, with eight actors playing a variety of roles in the adaptation.

Jordan Stafford starred as Othello, Carl Mizell as Iago, Lexee Longwell as Desdemona, Donte Green as Cassio, Zach Wood as Brabantio et al, Kristen Carter as Emilia, Cassie Graham as Bianca, and Devin Mott as the Duke of Venice.

Though theater senior Lexee Longwell has taken on many roles at SVSU, she said what was interesting about “Othello” was the incorporation of research.

“You’re always encouraged to research every character you’re playing in every show that you do, but this one was a lot more in depth than I had originally anticipated,” Longwell said.

Director Steven Erickson said the … Read More…

Pulitzer prize-winning journalist to visit campus thanks to grant

One final speaker will be brought to SVSU to close out the university’s celebration of Black History Month.

The Washington, D.C., author studied journalism at Howard University and interned at publications such as ‘The Washington Post’ and ‘The Los Angeles Times.’

Wilkerson won the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism in 1994 during her time as the Chicago bureau chief of ‘The New York Times,’ making her the first African-American woman to win this honor.

Stadium rock giants succumb to sophomore slump on second album

After the success of their first studio album, “Night Visions” (2012), I was excited to hear what Imagine Dragons would do for their second album. However, I was sorely disappointed with their Feb. 17 release, “Smoke + Mirrors.”

This pop/rock band from Las Vegas gained popularity quickly with their tracks such as “It’s Time” and “Radioactive,” which was named the biggest pop hit of the year by “Rolling Stone.”

Their first album built a very specific sound for the band, one that really showcased lead vocalist Dan Reynolds’ talent. I am still able to listen to “Night Visions” over and over because every song is catchy and flows into the next easily.

While their first album is a cohesive collection … Read More…

In online debates, be gentle but firm when discussing social injustices

I was recently involved in an online discussion on the Facebook group SVSU I’M WHAT EVER. This discussion was concerning the cat-call like qualities of the sticky notes randomly found around campus thanks to the Optimistic Club and Colleges Against Cancer.

While I was on the side that really didn’t see the harm in these sticky notes, the concern was there and brought up. The conversation got a little…out of hand, you could say, and eventually the post was taken down.

Another such discussion began when a user posted on a new Facebook group called the SVSU Student Run Forum about racially offensive memes posted on a “Meme Monday” post started within the group.  While I do not condone the … Read More…
