SVSU club hockey players Guy Soulliere and Steven Roberts will be traveling to Russia to compete on the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III select team.
The tournament, hosting teams from both Europe and Russia, will be in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8.
The American team met in Albany, New York, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4 for a training camp to prepare for their upcoming tournament.
Twenty-two players are representing 14 universities on this year’s team. According to Soulliere, the team practices every day and believes there is always room for improvement.
Roberts is a general business major from Beaverton. This is Roberts’ second time competing with the American Select team. Two years ago, he played on the same team and had the opportunity to travel with them through Europe. Roberts is ending a five-year career on SVSU’s team.
“Playing hockey has impacted me numerous ways and has taught me a lot,” said Soulliere, a fifth-year graphic design major from Gladwin. “Overcoming obstacles, good character, leadership, brotherhood and, most importantly, the drive to better myself and others around me.”
This is Soulliere’s fifth and final year competing on SVSU’s team. This is his first year on the American Select team, and he feels that he has proven that he will be an asset to the team.
“I feel like I got the spot on this team by being consistent over the last four years with my play and positive attitude,” Soulliere said. “I feel I have proven that I am one of the top players in the country at the Division 3 level.”
Soulliere plays offense and defense, while Roberts plays offense. Both were top scorers for SVSU’s team last season.
