Golfers conclude 2017 season

The men’s and women’s golf teams finished the fall portion of their 2017-18 competitive seasons on a decent note.

Finishing fifth in the Motor City Invitational TPC Dearborn on Monday, Oct. 18, the men’s team needed some second-round efforts to come back from a disappointing first round.

Redshirt freshman Gunnar Stein and senior Austin Carter tied for low score in the first round for the Cardinals with a pair of 79s. Stein followed up with a second-round 72 to lead the Cardinals with a total score of seven-over-par. Carter finished the second day a shot behind Stein, finishing eight-over for the tournament. The scores were good for 11th and 14th individually for the two players, respectively.

Senior captain Ryan Peruski shot 81-75. Peruski was followed by senior Mason Motte (82-77) and sophomore Alex Dice (85-77).
Wayne State topped the invitational, beating fifth-place SVSU by 15 strokes.

“For the fall, we are a little disappointed, because we all know we didn’t play to the potential we could’ve,” Peruski said. “A lot of us know that if we perform like we did in the fall, we’ll fall short of reaching our goals, so I think for this winter, there will certainly be a level of drive (going into winter break).”

In their fall season, the Cardinals carded four top-five finishes, featuring one victory.

The women’s golf team also concluded its fall competition with a fifth-place finish, this time at the Boulder Creek Golf Club on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Sophomore Sabrina Coffman led the way for the Lady Cardinals, earning a runner-up finish in a field of nearly 50 individuals. Coffman shot 80-75 to finish four strokes behind Lake Superior State’s Naomi Keyte.

Sophomore Shelbe Cahill finished T-19 with scores of 81-83, followed by redshirt freshman Lucy Cornwell (83-84), sophomore Alexa Marston (86-82) and sophomore Emily Barker (83-89).

Wayne State once again took the victory with a two-day score of 634, 17 strokes ahead of SVSU’s 651.

The men’s and women’s golf teams will resume competition on March 17, as each team hosts the SVSU Spring Invitational in Lexington and Georgetown, Kentucky.
