Swim and Dive:
The SVSU men’s and women’s swim and dive teams opened their seasons 2-0 following weekend wins over Alma College on Friday, Oct. 13, and Kalamazoo on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Against Alma, both teams dominated as the women won 151-51 and the men won 155-42. SVSU won both the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relay. Junior Amanda Thielen won the women’s 1,000-yard freestyle, and Jayden Hutchinson won the event for the men. Shaun Yap and Rebeca Martinez won the 200-yard freestyle races, while Michael Spears and Taylor Grashuis won the 50-yard freestyle.

Lydia Mattar and Peter Lin each won the 100-yard IM. Martinez and Spears also won the 100-yard butterfly for SVSU. Melanie Soenksen won the 100-yard freestyle for the women, while Kyle Amick took the event for the men. Thielen won the 100-yard backstroke and Dalton Pokley won the event for the men. Alexandria Davis and Lin won the 500-yard freestyle events for SVSU.

Wilhelmina Francisco won both diving events for the SVSU women, while Kevin Aziz and Justin Ott split the diving event wins for the men.

SVSU shared similar success against Kalamazoo, winning nearly every event. The teams’ next meets are Saturday, Oct. 28, on the road against Findlay.

Women’s Soccer:
The SVSU women’s soccer team topped Northwood University 4-0 on Sunday, Oct. 15.

The Cardinals began the scoring in the 16th minute when sophomore defender Molly Vanderhoff found the back of the net to make it 1-0 SVSU. Just before halftime, SVSU added another goal when defender Zo Schultz found forward Sakura Bals to make it 2-0. The third Cardinal goal came in the 71st minute, when Vanderhoff found midfielder Valentina Giambanco. Bals scored an unassisted goal in the 87th minute to round out the scoring for the Cardinals.

Next weekend, SVSU travels to Ashland on Friday, Oct. 20, and Tiffin on Sunday, Oct. 22.
