The Lady Cards volleyball team came out of the weekend splitting their games, winning 3-0 to Northwood Friday, Sept. 21, and falling to Ferris State 3 -1 on Saturday, Sept. 22.
The games were the teams’ sixth and seventh conference games this season, putting them at 4-3 overall.
Against Northwood, the team stayed ahead and took all three sets.
The first set finished with a score of 25-18. The team stuck close with their opponent the second set, but came out on top with a score of 25-22. In the third set the team finished with an 11-point gap, 25-14.
Sarah Tabit led the team in kills with 13.
Head coach Will Stanton believes that the team is continuously improving.
“We are getting tougher and more consistent each time out,” he said. “This weekend was a good example of some matches that we would not have gotten the same results in a month ago.”
Saturday, the team fell 3-1 against undefeated Ferris State. In the first match, the Lady Cards stuck close in the beginning of the first set, but they started to fall behind on errors, giving up points to Ferris and ultimately losing, 25-12.
The team came back strong in the second set with a close 25-23 victory. In the third set, SVSU lead 20-13 before Ferris began to catch up.
“We felt we could compete with both of the teams this weekend, and we were able to do that,” Stanton said. “I think we are good enough to finish the third set that we were up but didn’t. So, we still have some things to work on.”
After losing the third, the team started strong in the fourth set with a 2-1 lead out of the gate. The teams stayed close together until Ferris was able to build a six-point lead that the Cardinals could not overcome.
“We need to find a little more offense, so we will be working on that for the next few weeks,”Stanton said. “We have to find some more kills to help us finish matches like we were in (Saturday) with Ferris State.”
