Women’s soccer showcase strong defense with win against Tritons

On Friday, Sept. 8, the Saginaw Valley women’s soccer team (2-0) traveled to the University of Missouri St. Louis to take on the Tritons (1-1) at 5 pm for a regional matchup in some unfavorable weather. The Cardinals, currently ranked No. 16, look to keep their season perfect after winning their first two games.

The Cardinals controlled the majority of the first half, as they pounded the Tritons’ net with eight shots and kept the Tritons at zero shots. At 23:07, the Cardinals opened up the scoring with a goal from senior Lindsay Stroebel, her second of the season, off a feed from Valentina Giambanco, her second assist of the season.

SVSU continued their strong defensive play into the second half, keeping the Tritons to only one shot. The Cardinals then expanded on their 1-0 lead with a goal from forward Molly Vanderhoff that went unassisted at 84:00. The goal, Vanderhoff’s second of the season, was the final goal of the game, as the Cardinals held off the Tritons for a 2-0 victory.

Goalkeeper Alyssa Watts earned her third victory of the season. The Cardinals remained undefeated, winning their third straight game. Molly Vanderhoff led the game with four shots, and Tritons goaltender Amber Hayes had an impressive game with five saves.

For their final game of the weekend, the Cardinals took to the field against the Maryville Saints in Missouri, which concluded after this week’s production of The Valley Vanguard.
