The SVSU women’s tennis team put up its best ITA Tournament performance in over 10 years, winning three out of the four consolation draws at the competition in Midland over the weekend.
Senior Shea Donahue took home first place in the A Draw losers bracket.
The two A Draw doubles teams finished in an all-SVSU final, resulting in the match not needing to be played. Donahue and sophomore partner Taylor McLaughlin advanced to the final, as did senior Danielle Slonac and sophomore Madeline Miller.
The freshman pairing of Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell captured the B Doubles Draw championship.
Head coach Jennifer Boehm praised the performances by the team’s doubles players, an area on the team that had some concerns at the beginning of the season after losing key members from a year ago.
“We made big strides in doubles this weekend with all three of our teams,” Boehm said. “It’s been happening gradually over these first few weeks, but we really saw things click in this tournament. We had a great team last year, but our doubles are the strongest they’ve ever been across the board. We know they can get even better.”
The ITA tournament focuses more on the individual on the court and less on the teams that are participating.
Donahue said the team showed strong chemistry throughout a successful tournament.
“(I’m) very happy with the team’s performance this weekend,” she said. “It’s extremely satisfying to know that this is one of the best performances we have had in a while. Our team does an outstanding job of making these ITAs a team feel. We play individually, but it’s awesome to hear one another from far away cheering.”
The team travels this weekend to take on Michigan Tech University in a bout on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m.
SVSU will then take on Lake Superior State University on Sunday, Oct. 1 at noon.
