Saginaw Valley State University hosted the SVSU Classic for the men’s and women’s track teams this past Friday in the new field house, with strong showings from both teams.
For the men, sophomore Malik Washington led all times in the preliminary runs of the 60-meter dash with the time of 7.17 seconds. Washington would improve that time to 7.12 in the finals to take first in the dash.
Sophomore Joey Southgate finished with a time of 8:50.25 in the 3,000-meter run, good for a first place finish. Southgate would go on to also place second in the one-mile run with a time of 4:15.08. Junior David Jensen finished seconds after Southgate in the mile for third place, with a running time of 4:30.51.
Saginaw Valley junior Josh Simmons also posted a first-place finish for the Cardinals, running 49.61 in the 400-meter dash.
Junior sprinter D’Omar Boyden took the victory in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 8.72.
Also taking first place for the team were senior Frank Sanders in the high jump (2.09 meters) and sophomore Robert Tarpley in the long jump (6.74 meters) and the triple jump (14.26 meters).
The women’s team also performed well.
Junior Tierra Williams marked a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.35 seconds.
Cardinal senior Jessica Reeves finished in first place in the 3,000-meter run, finishing with a time of 10:42.78.
Anna Fochesato added two first-place finishes for the squad as well. The junior claimed victory in the high jump with a height of 1.68 meters as well as the triple jump, posting a mark of 11.31 meters.
Sophomore Christina Micale had a time of 5:17.86 in the mile run, good for a third-place finish.
Both teams will return to action for the Doug Hansen Open at 2:30 pm on Friday, Jan. 23, in the SVSU Field House
