The Saginaw Valley State University hockey team resumed play after a nearly two month break with a win over divisional foe Lawrence Tech University by a score of 4-2.
The Cardinal’s came out strong, showing their dominance early on with a pair of goals within the first three minutes. The period would settle down afterward and even out between the two teams, ending the period at 2-0 Cardinals.
“Coming out of the gate strong really helped us get into the game early after such a long break,” captain Scott Walter said after the game.
The second period would prove to be the most difficult for the Cardinal club, being devastated by penalties for much of the period. Lawrence Tech capitalized on the multiple power plays, netting two shots to tie the game.
SVSU responded as the second period was coming to a close, taking a lead that it would not surrender heading into the final period.
The Cardinals again struggled to stay out of the penalty box, but managed to add an insurance goal to secure the team’s first victory since November 28.
“We really had to grind through the second period and overcome all of the penalties tonight,” Walter added. “A win is a win and we have to just rest up for tomorrow night.”
The Cardinal’s are coming back for a rematch against Lawrence Tech at the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena at 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.
