Several Saginaw Valley State University hockey players have officially played their final regular season home game in Death Valley as the Cardinals defeated Lawrence Tech University on Senior Night by the score of 6-3.
Much like the first match against Lawrence Tech the night before, the Cardinals struck quickly. Less than two minutes in, junior Brandon Rosen beat the goaltender on a rebound from a Scott Walter shot for a 1-0 lead. Moments later, junior Dakota Crockford netted the second goal for the team, giving the team a 2-0 lead.
SVSU was still not done in the period. Freshman Guy Soulliere hooked the puck into the net while lying on the ice, a goal that went unassisted. Shortly after, brother and senior Jeff Soulliere pushed the lead to four with Guy getting an assist on the play.
The second period proved to be much more balanced after a goaltender switch for Lawrence Tech. Much like the night before, the team began to run into penalty problems, allowing a goal to Lawrence Tech in the process and quieting the crowd.
Nearing the end of the period, the SVSU players looked to the crowd to swing momentum back into their favor. With minutes remaining in the second period, the Cardinals were able to answer on a one-timer from senior Joel Chronowski, the defenseman’s first of the year. Guy Soulliere was able to beat the clock shortly after to push the lead to 6-1 for the start of the third.
Lawrence Tech continued to battle back throughout the period, but was enough to overcome the big lead of the Cardinal’s.
Saginaw Valley will be looking to finish the season strong with a pair of away matches remaining. The team’s next game will be at Northwood University at 7:50 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6.
