Allendale schools left in limbo as state budget stalemate drags on

As students across West Michigan settle into the new academic year, Allendale Public Schools finds itself caught in uncertainty, with state lawmakers in Lansing still unable to pass a budget. For Superintendent Garth Cooper, the lack of clarity has made planning the year feel like trying to balance on shifting sand.

“It’s been difficult to plan because, without a state budget, we don’t know what to anticipate,” Cooper explained. The stakes are real for families too, who are left wondering whether they should start budgeting for school lunches, or whether there will be enough staff to cover all bus routes.

According to district figures, nearly 70% of students could lose access to free meals if a budget isn’t approved soon. Covering that cost locally would mean redirecting more than $620,000 away from essentials like teachers, books and technology. “Every dollar we use to fill the gap is a dollar less for classrooms,” Cooper said.

Bond setbacks add to the strain

The funding uncertainty comes on the heels of two failed bond proposals, together worth about $88 million, aimed at updating infrastructure, athletics facilities and other needs. While voters rejected both, the district isn’t giving up.

Cooper confirmed that a new, scaled-back bond proposal is in the works, this time focusing more narrowly on infrastructure rather than athletic extras. The district hopes to bring the measure back to voters in August 2026, with planning set to begin this autumn.

State Representative Luke Meerman, a Republican from Coopersville, acknowledged the difficult position facing Cooper and his team. “He’s a good superintendent, and he’s in a tight spot,” Meerman said, adding that lawmakers are working to give districts more flexibility in how they use state funds.

Families and schools left waiting

For Cooper, the explanations from Lansing don’t change the immediate reality: classrooms are opening without financial certainty. “If there’s a better way to fund schools, I’m open to it,” he said, “but leaving us hanging in the wind is not the answer.”

The delay doesn’t just affect spreadsheets — it ripples into homes, school cafeterias and classrooms. Parents are left unsure whether lunch will remain free. Teachers don’t know what resources they’ll have. Students feel the impact in ways adults sometimes overlook, from cancelled activities to ageing facilities that desperately need investment.

With September already underway, Allendale begins yet another school year balancing ambition with financial restraint, waiting for state leaders to break the impasse. Until then, the district remains in limbo, caught between the pressing needs of its students and the political gridlock in Lansing.
