The semester may be winding down, but the Saginaw Valley club hockey team is finally healing up and skating at full force.
Last weekend, SVSU played two games against Central Michigan University.
The Cardinals lost 8-4 Friday, Dec. 11, in Mount Pleasant. Game two was hosted at Death Valley on Saturday, Dec. 12, and SVSU came away with a 6-3 victory.
Friday’s loss was a typical loss for the Cardinals, with the defense letting up multiple goals while the offense kept the team in it. SVSU was outscored by CMU 5-1 in the final period.
Both Tibaudo and Myers were excited to say the second season rankings were announced Friday Dec. 11. SVSU moved up from No. 12 to No. 11. The team is still one spot out from where they will need to be to participate in the playoffs.
With Central Michigan currently holding the No. 7 ranking, it was important to hand CMU at least one defeat, and that is just what SVSU did.
Guy Soulliere scored the first goal of Saturday’s game and got off to a hot start.
The next was shot by Austin Carpenter and assisted by Soulliere.
In the second period, SVSU scored a third goal, shot by Brody Duncan and assisted by Steven Roberts.
Sean Staniszewski quickly tacked on another goal, assisted by Soulliere.
Tyler Myers, following another assist from Soulliere, scored the fourth goal of the second period.
CMU was shut out throughout the second.
SVSU scored one more goal in the third period, as Myers scored his second goal of the game.
Despite its recent success, the team has continued to be plagued by injuries.
Coach Chris Tibaudo is hoping that all the players will heal up, as just a few of the players are still sitting out off the ice with injuries.
Following the semester break, SVSU will only have two more home games.
The first three games of the new year will be on the road before the Cardinals return to Death Valley on Jan. 23 against Lawrence Technological University.
The team will look to improve on its 8-15 record.
