The University played host to an abundance of guests this weekend, allowing family and friends to experience a glimpse of what students’ routines have been like since they have left home in late August.

Family Weekend was held for three days, from Friday, Oct. 9, to Sunday, Oct. 11 and coordinated by assistant directors of the Student Counseling Center Anne Acker and Jenny Stephens.

“I see a lot of students, especially freshman, who are adjusting to college life,” Stephens said. “For those students who are struggling … Family Weekend could be an opportunity to make things easier and (their) parents (can) see where and how their (child) lives and what a great, family-friendly environment (SVSU) is.”

“I think inviting family and showing them around is very exciting for students,” Acker added. “It can help build that connection for later down the road when stories are told (about their college experience).”
The weekend was packed full of events: Coop the Cardinal’s birthday celebration took place in the Marketplace at Doan on Friday evening. Attendees enjoyed birthday cake, prizes, a photo booth and various games.

Saturday morning started off with a free pancake breakfast provided by the National Residence Hall Honorary before the Colleges Against Cancer Colors 5k Run/Walk.

The football game against Ashland University in Wickes Stadium began at 7 p.m. The game was preceded by tailgating events.

Theatre students showcased their talent in three performances of “The Games Afoot” in the Malcolm Field Theatre.

Dean of Students and Associate Provost for Student Affairs Merry Jo Brandimore oversees the planning of Family Weekend each year.

“Activities range from a ‘Find the Baby Cardinal’ scavenger hunt to the Amazing Race to theatre performances to Bubble Soccer and other sporting events … so there’s truly something for everyone!” she said. “I’d like to express my deep appreciation for everyone at SVSU who contributes to making this significant University tradition so special.”

Michele Gunkelman, director of Residential Life, also plays a large role in the planning of Family Weekend.

“It’s important for the students to be able to take ownership for their new environment and their school,” Gunkelman said. “By hosting their family, (students) are able to demonstrate how they have acclimated, made connections and can include their family in on their experience as a Cardinal.”
