SVSU’s chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma made the dreams of many little girls come true.
The inner beauty of about 30 Saginaw-area girls aged 3-11 shone through at the sorority’s main philanthropic event, Princess for a Day, on Saturday, April 12.
Girls came dressed as their favorite princesses and played games, danced and decorated tiaras with members of Phi Sigma Sigma.

About 30 Saginaw-area girls attended Phi Sigma Sigma’s third annual Princess for a Day event on Saturday, April 12. The sorority aims to involve itself with the local community and empower girls, helping them build confidence in themselves and see their inner beauty. Sorority members led girls , dressed in sparking ball gowns and tiaras, through an afternoon of games and craft projects.
Elementary education freshman Melanie Leduc, coordinator of the event, aimed to involve the sorority in community service, empower girls and represent Greek Life in a positive way.
“We want this to be an uplifting experience for both our chapter and the young girls,” Leduc said. “We want to give back to the community as much as possible.”
Members got creative in advertising this year’s event, communicating to the area via word-of-mouth and fliers at local businesses.
English education sophomore Cassidy Badami said the sorority places importance on fostering healthy self-esteem in young girls, which is why Princess for a Day remains successful in its third year.
“We want to teach young girls to be confident with who they are,” Badami said.
Next to Mr. Phi Significant, Princess for a Day is one of the sorority’s biggest events.
Psychology senior Haley Martinez said while the sorority’s international philanthropic cause is school and college readiness, members will take on a local cause in the close future.
“(School and College Readiness) is a continuous event where members visit local schools,” Martinez said. “We donate school supplies and there is no deadline because we work toward goals each year.”
“The best lesson for the girls to learn today is to have fun and know that they are princesses no matter what,” Martinez added. “We really want them to know that they are beautiful inside and out.”
