Following several open forums and rounds of interviews, a new Associate Provost for Student Affairs has been chosen at SVSU, Dr. Sidney R. Childs.
Current Associate Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Merry Jo Brandimore is set to retire in August after 33 years at SVSU. Childs is expected to begin work around the same time that Brandimore retires.
“I wasn’t involved in the search process, which is routine when hiring a replacement,” Brandimore said.
Childs graduated from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Ohio. He has since worked at the university in various positions, ending his tenure as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs, a position he has held since 2014. Childs described this position as the “primary student advocate” in many departments. He received a bachelor of business administration in 1990, a master of public administration in 1993, and a doctorate of education in 2013. He was also a member of several professional development programs, such as BGSU Executive Leadership Program and Institute for New Vice Presidents for Student Affairs.
His on-campus service has included direct work with issues such as diversity, multicultural affairs, LGBT groups and other programs in order to increase student retention and safety. He has also served as a faculty adviser for several on-campus groups, as well as teaching two classes at BGSU. He has worked closely with many students and many issues on campus, and is looking forward to continuing his work at SVSU.
“I am very much excited to join a motivated group of faculty, staff and students who are committed to creating innovative programs, services and practices that enhance the overall student experience,” Childs said.
