Hopeful students were given a glimpse into the diversity of SVSU’s Greek Life during sorority and fraternity information nights, punch bowl socials and other events during rush week.
Fraternities such as Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Kappa Tau and Sigma Pi were busy at the Cards Party held in the O’Neill Arena of the Ryder Center on Wednesday, Sept. 16. The fraternities were accompanied by sororities, including Kappa Tau Epsilon, Alpha Sigma Alpha and Phi Sigma Sigma.
These fraternities and sororities were also spreading the word about their organizations in the President’s Courtyard throughout the week.
Fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon hosted a picnic Wednesday, Sept. 16, to introduce prospective candidates to their chapter through food, music and a makeshift Slip-n-Slide.
Students walking by were encouraged to stop and join in as a way of involving the general SVSU community in Greek Life, too.
One student in particular is very excited about her pledge choice, Delta Sigma Pi (DSP): a co-ed professional fraternity open to all majors of the College of Business and Management.
Cassandra Waterson, senior marketing major, knows she made the right choice by pledging for DSP.
“I was really involved in high school, and I get bored when I’m not doing anything,” Waterson said. “I know that joining DSP will give me a busy schedule, but I prefer it that way.”
Waterson had many great experiences at Davison High School and wants to continue volunteering.
Her involvement started when she began helping her father coach sports teams; through this, her love for sports grew.
Waterson has a passion for softball and played on Davison’s varsity team throughout high school. Her team involvement made her want to join many groups, such as student government, and she was treasurer during her senior year.
Delta Sigma Pi is focused on networking and career opportunities but also places emphasis on service initiatives. Saginaw Valley’s chapter of the fraternity, the Mu Phi Chapter, has recently volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saginaw, Relay for Life and the Children’s Zoo of Saginaw.
Waterson is looking forward to future professional and volunteering events due to her first impression of the fraternity.
“My favorite event so far was the punch bowl social (on Thursday, Sept. 10) because everyone was so friendly and welcoming,” she said.
DSP held two informational nights on Wednesday, Sept. 9. and Tuesday, Sept. 15.
“I enjoyed how kind everyone was and I could tell that they really cared about me,” Waterson said. “I didn’t even have to approach DSP brothers because they approached me first and they were very inviting.”
Waterson says she is eager to attend more events and meet more of her brothers.
“Right now I only know one other person pledging who is also a senior marketing major,” Waterson said. “But I can’t wait to meet more people and get involved.”
