While most people dream of early retirement, one man in Brazil has done quite the opposite — and earned himself a world record in the process. At 100 years old, Walter Orthmann has spent an astonishing 84 years working at the same company, becoming a global symbol of dedication, resilience, and the value of finding purpose in your work.
The Growing Demand for Data-Driven Decision Making in Silicon Valley
He quit, ran out of money, and begged to come back — here’s how his boss reacted
A humble start in tough times
Walter began his career at just 15 years old, during a period of financial hardship for his family. In 1938, like many teenagers of that era, he took on work not for pocket money but out of necessity. “Back then,” he recalled, “children were expected to work to help support their households. I was the eldest of five, and my mother brought me to look for a job when I was 14.”
He landed a position at Indústrias Renaux, a textile company in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. What started as a warehouse role preparing shipments quickly evolved into something much greater.
Walter’s sharp mind, work ethic, and fluency in German — a valuable skill in the company’s early days — helped him rise through the ranks. It wasn’t long before he was promoted to sales manager, a position he held for decades.

A career unlike any other
Earlier this year, Walter officially earned the title of “Longest Career in the Same Company” from Guinness World Records. And it’s easy to see why. His career spans over eight decades, surviving world wars, the rise of the internet, countless economic shifts, and massive changes in the way we work.
Walter’s story isn’t just remarkable for its length, but for the fact that he’s remained engaged, relevant, and deeply valued throughout.

Adapting through the ages
What kept him going all these years? According to Walter, the key was always staying curious and open to change. He never saw himself as stuck in his ways, and he embraced each new phase of the business with enthusiasm. His ability to evolve with the times — from handwritten ledgers to digital tools — is part of what made him such a lasting force in the company.
Those who’ve worked with him describe him as charismatic, kind, and full of wisdom. His presence in the office has become a sort of legend — not because of his age, but because of his optimism, consistency, and the genuine care he shows for others.

A celebration of life and work
Walter celebrated his 100th birthday this April surrounded by friends, colleagues, and family. And yes, he’s still active — showing up with the same energy that’s defined his professional life from the start.
His advice? “Find a good company and work in a field that motivates you,” he says. Simple, timeless, and clearly effective.

In a world that’s constantly chasing the next best thing, Walter’s story reminds us that sometimes, longevity and loyalty are their own kind of success. And at 100, he’s not just the man with the longest career — he’s also a reminder of the joy that can come from doing work you love, every single day.
