March Madness no. 1 seeds ranked before Sweet 16

With Florida knocked off by Iowa, the field of top seeds has shrunk: only three No. 1 seeds remain in this year’s March Madness. Duke, Michigan and Arizona were the teams that dominated the conversation all season, and all three have reached the Sweet 16 as expected — but the path to the Final Four is far from guaranteed.

Historically, No. 1 seeds carry heavy weight in March: in the 64-team era they’ve captured the national title roughly 65% of the time, and eight of the last ten champions have worn the top seed. That track record makes it reasonable to expect a one seed will again hoist the trophy. Below is a refreshed power ranking of the remaining No. 1s, a look at matchups and the betting angles you might care about.

Arizona — Top pick at +400: why the Wildcats look most dangerous

Arizona entered the tournament among the favorites and has done little to shake that billing. Their second-round game against Utah State was tighter than many expected — the Aggies closed to within a single-digit deficit in the second half — but Arizona regained control and finished with a comfortable margin.

What makes Arizona a clear title contender

• Versatile scoring options: An experienced lead guard, dynamic freshman wings and size inside give the Wildcats multiple ways to win.
• Balance of veteran and youth: A steady floor general complements high-upside freshmen and reliable frontcourt play.
• Depth and matchup flexibility: They can adjust to speed, size or halfcourt battles depending on the opponent.

Arizona likely draws the toughest Sweet 16 matchup among the one seeds, but the projected Elite Eight opponent looks more manageable. Arkansas, coached by John Calipari, has been playing better lately but has shown vulnerability against teams with size. If Arizona can contain Arkansas’ wings and take Darius Acuff Jr. away from the sweet spots, they’ll be well-positioned to handle whoever comes through the adjacent bracket — whether that’s Purdue or Texas.

At +400, Arizona represents solid value. Their combination of talent on the perimeter and a rugged interior makes them a matchup problem for almost every team left standing, and their roster construction suggests they can grind through a physical regional run.

Michigan — Solid second choice at +290: strengths, tempo and matchup notes

Michigan earned a favorable route to the Sweet 16 and has largely justified the draw. After looking vulnerable in the Big Ten tournament, the Wolverines have reasserted themselves and are as dangerous as ever when both bigs are clicking.

Why Michigan threatens the rest of the field

• Interior force: The duo of Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara presents matchup problems for teams without size or physicality inside.
• Tempo matchup with Alabama: Alabama plays near the top of the country in pace, and Michigan can match up athletically enough to make it a high-possession battle.
• Top-end defense: Michigan’s ability to clog lanes and defend pick-and-rolls forces opponents into low-efficiency shots.

Michigan’s Sweet 16 opponent, Alabama, has been hot early in the tournament but can be streaky over a game or a weekend. Tempo will matter — Alabama ranks among the fastest teams nationally while Michigan’s offensive pace is also on the quicker side — and the matchup boils down to who controls the boards and finishes at the rim. If Michigan’s bigs dominate the paint, they become a legitimate Final Four threat.

My only reservation with the Wolverines is price: at +290 the payoff is slimmer than I’d like, and if they meet an Iowa State team in the regional final that knocks down enough threes, Michigan could run into trouble despite favorable matchups earlier on.

Duke — +420 and a tougher road: injuries, pressure and looming tests

Duke rounds out the trio of one seeds but sits a step behind Arizona and Michigan in my pecking order. The Blue Devils haven’t yet shown the kind of dominance you expect from a national title favorite, and injuries have clouded their upside.

Key concerns for Duke’s title chances

• Injury issues: Missing Caleb Foster for the foreseeable future and seeing Patrick Ngongba exit with a boot have limited Duke’s backcourt options.
• Vulnerable to full-court pressure: St. John’s applies relentless defensive pressure, which could expose a diminished guard rotation.
• Grueling potential path: Even if they survive St. John’s, Duke could face historic programs like Michigan State or UConn next — both teams that can slow the game and test their depth.

Head coach Jon Scheyer has done a solid job stewarding the program, but this stretch will test his in-game adjustments and his staff’s ability to adapt with key players unavailable. Winning through a gauntlet of disruptive defensive teams and deeper rotations may be Duke’s biggest challenge. If the Blue Devils can contain St. John’s pressure and get production from bench pieces, they remain alive — but the path looks steeper than it does for Arizona or Michigan.
