• Standings gap: about 5½ games behind the third NL Wild Card.

Miami Marlins: late-summer stumble

Miami roared into the All-Star break and ownership signaled confidence by saying Sandy Alcantara would not be traded. But the team’s projection slipped from a solid footing to a near long shot: 20% to 4.6% since Aug. 1.

Baltimore Orioles: momentum stalled at the wrong time

The Orioles came into August as a legitimate dark-horse contender in the AL Wild-Card conversation, but their estimated postseason chances have fallen sharply to 9.0%, down from 23.3% at the month’s start. A four-game skid hasn’t helped.

• Barriers: beyond being two games back of the current Wild-Card group, Baltimore would also need to pass the Tigers, Guardians, Blue Jays, Rangers and Twins.

• Division reality: Seattle sits roughly four games back in the West and would need to pass the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros to win the division.
• Wild-Card complexity: the AL Wild Card picture is crowded — eight teams contesting three spots — which makes the Mariners’ three-game deficit deceptively daunting.
• Offensive needs: production from Cal Raleigh has dipped to a brutal .156/.273/.296 with 13 homers, a slump that undermines Seattle’s ability to flip tight games.

Cleveland Guardians: close but slipping

At 62-66, the Guardians remain surprisingly close to Wild-Card position — roughly one game back — but their probability of reaching October has dipped from 39.4% to 29.4% since Aug. 1.

• Division picture: Cleveland trails the Chicago White Sox by 4½ games; the White Sox are projected at 50.9% to win the AL Central while Cleveland sits near 16.5%.
• Best path: the Guardians’ realistic route may be to climb the Wild-Card ladder by passing multiple teams rather than trying to chase the division outright.
• Positive note: José Ramírez has returned from hamate surgery, giving Cleveland a much-needed boost in power and run production.

Teams nearing zero — a tough August

Several National League clubs have seen their October hopes approach statistical insignificance.

• Washington Nationals: down from 4.2% to about 0.2%.
• Cincinnati Reds: slid from 1.6% to roughly 0.1%.
• New York Mets: projections have cooled from 0.3% to near 0.1%.

Those numbers capture the harsh truth of baseball’s late-season math: with limited games left, even a small losing stretch can turn a faint pulse into a statistical nonstarter.

What each fallen contender needs to revive its bid

• Immediate health: key bats returning from injury or returning to form (Pirates, D-backs, Orioles).
• Pitching stabilization: reliable starts from veteran arms and fewer blown leads (Pittsburgh, Miami).
• Offensive rebounds: slumping hitters regaining power and on-base ability (Mariners’ Cal Raleigh).
• Stronger finishes: more wins against divisional rivals and maintaining pressure on teams ahead in the standings.

Even with the odds against them, teams that fix a few of those issues quickly can still make late charges. Baseball’s postseason picture remains fluid, and the next few weeks will tell which of these slipping clubs can right the ship.
