Scientists crown the world’s healthiest food—can you guess what tops the list?

Show summary Hide summary

Staring down the endless options in the fruit and veg aisle can be a bit overwhelming. But what if science had already picked the ultimate health food? Spoiler: it’s not kale, nor is it blueberries. The answer might surprise you — and it’s probably been sitting quietly in the corner of your salad drawer all along.

The humble green that packs a serious punch

Drumroll, please. According to a team of researchers at William Paterson University in New Jersey, the most nutrient-dense food on the planet is… watercress.

Yes, really. That slightly peppery leaf we usually relegate to garnish duties or the odd sandwich is, in fact, the heavyweight champion of the superfood world. In a study supported by the CDC, watercress earned a perfect score — providing 100% of your daily requirements for 17 essential nutrients in just 100 grams.

It’s rich in everything from vitamin C and calcium to iron, potassium, folate and more. Basically, if you made a bingo card of everything your body needs, watercress would fill it in one go.

Why don’t we eat more of it?

Despite its impressive credentials, watercress often flies under the radar in everyday cooking. In some parts of Europe, especially France, it’s more of a staple — but here in the UK, we tend to overlook it unless it’s playing a supporting role in a fancy starter.

That’s a shame, really, because watercress is affordable, versatile and widely available year-round. You can toss it into salads, blend it into soups, or wilt it into stews. It’s brilliant whizzed into a pesto, added to omelettes, or simply laid on toast with a soft-boiled egg. It delivers both flavour and health benefits — and all for under 25 calories per generous handful.

The benefits go beyond the plate

Beyond being a nutritional overachiever, watercress has a long-standing reputation as a natural detoxifier. It’s a diuretic, which can help flush out toxins, and it’s packed with antioxidants known to fight oxidative stress. Some research even suggests it may support cardiovascular health and bone strength.

Nutritionists recommend around 80–100 grams per serving, which counts as one of your five-a-day and provides a huge nutritional boost without weighing you down.

Just make sure you’re buying the good stuff: look for bunches with vibrant green leaves and avoid any that look limp or bruised. Freshness matters — watercress is best eaten within a couple of days of buying, so it’s worth storing it properly in the fridge crisper to keep it at its best.

An easy upgrade to everyday meals

Let’s be honest — not every “superfood” lives up to the hype. Some are pricey, others taste like you’re chewing on lawn trimmings. But watercress? It’s delicious, inexpensive, and goes with just about everything.

Its bold, peppery flavour (think mustard leaves or rocket) gives a bit of bite to richer dishes, and even a small handful can transform a basic meal into something far more satisfying — and far better for you.

So next time you’re doing the weekly shop, maybe skip the obscure powders and £4 smoothies and pop a bunch of watercress into your basket instead. It turns out, the best thing you can do for your health might be that leafy green you’ve been walking past all along.
