The day a local bakery faced its biggest test

Her tiny shop was asked to supply 2,000 mini pies for a Tesla employee event. For Rasetarinera and her staff, it was a golden opportunity but also a logistical puzzle—stretching their ovens, staff hours and supplies to the limit. They worked overtime, bought ingredients up front and turned down other jobs to meet the schedule.

Then came another twist: Tesla’s contact doubled the order to 4,000 pies, raising the invoice to around $16,000. Rasetarinera sent a new bill to Tesla and kept baking. But behind the scenes, payments were routed through an outside vendor, City Flavor, which didn’t respond to her repeated requests for payment after the first batch was delivered.

“I’m a small business,” Rasetarinera explained in a message to her Tesla contact. “I don’t have the luxury of unlimited resources. I need to pay my staff.”

From dream order to financial nightmare

What should have been a flagship contract soon became a financial sinkhole. With extra staff hired and extra stock purchased, the bakery had already committed thousands of dollars. Then, just days before the next delivery, Tesla abruptly cancelled the order with a short email: “Sorry, we don’t think we’ll need this order anymore.”

For a business like Giving Pies, the impact was immediate and brutal. Piles of ingredients were already bought, overtime hours already clocked, and other customer orders already declined. The bakery faced unpaid invoices and unsold pies, with its financial future on the line.

Speaking to local media, Rasetarinera described feeling stranded after investing “time, resources and trust” in what she believed was a secure contract. Social media users quickly took up the story, criticising Tesla for leaving a small business in the lurch and urging the company to make amends.

When Elon Musk stepped in

Within days, the story reached Elon Musk himself. The billionaire responded on his platform X, apologising for what had happened and promising to “fix it immediately.”

True to his word, Musk ordered Tesla to buy every pie Giving Pies could produce, turning what had been a potential bankruptcy into a major windfall. Tesla also pledged to distribute the pies to local charities, making sure the unexpected order served the community rather than going to waste.
