A farmer accidentally grows the world’s most expensive mango – here’s why it’s so rare

Show summary Hide summary

It started with a simple purchase – a young farmer, a small mango sapling, and no idea of the fortune that would one day hang from its branches. What followed was a twist of fate that turned an ordinary orchard into a guarded sanctuary and a humble grower into the talk of the town. Here’s how one man’s curiosity led him to cultivate the world’s most luxurious mango.

From a humble seed to a golden discovery

Every farmer dreams of a good harvest, but few imagine stumbling upon a treasure that needs round-the-clock protection. That’s exactly what happened to Sankalp Singh Parihar, a modest farmer from Dhedagoua village in India’s Madhya Pradesh. One day, he bought a small mango sapling for just 2,500 rupees – roughly the cost of a family meal out – and planted it in his orchard, naming it ‘Damini’ after his mother.

For a while, everything seemed ordinary. Then one season, the fruit began turning an extraordinary shade of deep ruby red. It was no common mango – it was a Miyazaki mango, one of the world’s rarest and most expensive varieties, originally from Japan.

The ‘Egg of the Sun’

The Miyazaki mango, often called the Egg of the Sun, is a masterpiece of nature. Cultivated mainly on Japan’s Kyushu Island, it’s prized for its dazzling colour, rich sweetness, and jelly-like flesh. Each fruit can sell for up to €40 apiece, and that’s before they’re packed into luxury gift boxes.

Parihar describes the taste as “like nothing else” – tender skin, melt-in-the-mouth texture, and a perfume so rich you might think it’s been dipped in honey. He quickly realised that what he had growing in his orchard wasn’t just fruit – it was a fortune dangling from the branches.

Guarding the golden fruit

Word spread fast, as it always does in small villages. Before long, the story of the miracle mangoes hit local television, and curiosity soon turned to temptation. One night, thieves raided Parihar’s farm, making off with 14 of the prized fruits. “I was heartbroken,” he admits. Since then, he’s taken no chances – his orchard now has three guards and six dogs on duty, 24 hours a day.

It’s not exactly what you’d expect for a mango farm, but with fruit this valuable, protection is non-negotiable. As Parihar wryly notes, “I’d rather spend a little on security than lose something priceless.”

Not for sale – at least, not yet

Despite tempting offers from collectors and traders – some willing to pay over €200 per kilo – Parihar and his wife, Rani, refuse to sell a single mango. Instead, they’re nurturing the trees, collecting seeds, and planning to cultivate more. Their dream? To make these extraordinary fruits available at a fair price to local consumers, perhaps one day selling them for around 2,000 rupees per kilo.

“These mangoes are like our children,” Rani says. “We’re raising them with love. One day, everyone should be able to taste them.”

The sweet taste of patience

The story of Sankalp Singh Parihar isn’t just about rare fruit; it’s about luck, persistence, and the quiet pride of growing something remarkable. In a world obsessed with fast profits, his approach feels refreshingly patient.

Much like the mangoes themselves, success takes time to ripen. And if things go according to plan, the once-hidden orchard of Madhya Pradesh may soon be known worldwide – not just for its beauty, but for a farmer’s golden discovery born from one small seed, a bit of care, and a lot of heart.
