Since setting off from his small hometown of Fockbek in northern Germany, Lasse has clocked over 650,000 kilometres — the equivalent of circling the globe 15 times. He’s spent more than 6,700 hours aboard German trains, weaving his way across cities, landscapes, and time zones, with no fixed address beyond the next station.

“It’s the freedom I love most,” he says, seated in a café inside Frankfurt’s bustling main station. “Every day, I get to decide where I’m going. That, to me, is incredible.”
A minimalist on the move
His only real expense? A €5,888 first-class unlimited travel pass from Deutsche Bahn, which gives him access not just to trains but to the rail lounges in major stations. There, he eats, works, and washes up — using sinks for laundry and toothbrush sessions, and drying clothes overnight on sleeper trains.
Showers? Local pools near stations do the trick. Beds? He’s grown fond of reclining in first-class seats, which he claims are now comfier than any traditional bed. “I’ve gotten so used to the rocking of the train that I struggle to sleep in a real bed,” he admits with a grin.
Not all who wander are lost — especially with Wi-Fi
After finishing school, Lasse had planned to begin a programming apprenticeship. When that fell through, he stumbled upon a documentary about a man living on trains — and decided to try it for himself.

Germany’s rail system isn’t without flaws. With frequent delays, maintenance issues, and extended strike actions in 2023 and early 2024, Lasse’s plans have often been derailed — sometimes quite literally.
During long walkouts, he’s had to sleep in airports just to stay indoors. But none of it has put him off. “There are problems, of course. But the joy of this lifestyle outweighs them all.”
No plans to stop — for now
How long will he keep this up? “It could be one more year. It could be five,” he says. “Right now, I’m happy. I’m learning something new every single day.”
