Midwest refinery shutdown sends West Michigan gas prices climbing

Show summary Hide summary

Drivers across West Michigan are feeling the sting at the gas pump this week after severe storms forced a shutdown at one of the largest refineries in the Midwest. The temporary outage has rippled through the region, sending wholesale fuel prices soaring and leaving motorists bracing for higher costs.

“They produce millions of gallons of gasoline every single day,” explained Patrick De Haan, an analyst with GasBuddy. “When that production stops, even briefly, wholesale prices shoot up.”

In West Michigan, delivery points in Ferrysburg and Muskegon saw wholesale fuel costs jump by nearly 25 cents per gallon in the days following the shutdown. That means local gas stations buying fresh supplies have been forced to pay significantly more, with those costs quickly passed on to consumers.

How much West Michigan is paying

Just last week, drivers were paying around $3.39 a gallon after the usual pricing cycle reset. The latest hike has pushed costs up once again, leaving West Michigan drivers paying some of the highest prices seen this summer. County-by-county averages now sit at:

  • Kent County: $3.27/gallon
  • Muskegon County: $3.29/gallon
  • Ottawa County: $3.32/gallon
  • Kalamazoo County: $3.27/gallon

The price jump is frustrating for families already juggling back-to-school expenses and Labor Day travel plans. For many, it means adjusting budgets just to keep cars fuelled for daily commutes.

Relief may be around the corner

The good news, according to De Haan, is that this surge is expected to be temporary. The impact is highly regional, limited mainly to the Great Lakes states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and parts of Ohio. “Once we get past Labor Day, I’d expect to see more time where gas prices are back below the $3 mark,” he said.

This summer, West Michigan has experienced a predictable two-week price cycle. But with back-to-back increases caused by the refinery shutdown, many drivers are wondering when relief will arrive. De Haan suggests that those who can wait until the end of the week may see slightly better prices.

A reminder of volatility

If nothing else, this episode highlights just how vulnerable gas prices remain to sudden disruptions, whether from severe weather, supply chain issues, or refinery maintenance. One brief closure can send shockwaves across multiple states, even when long-term demand is steady.

For West Michigan drivers, that means the best strategy is to watch the cycle, top up when prices dip, and be ready for unexpected bumps along the way. For now, patience—and a half tank—may be the best way to ride out the storm.
