She is suing her parents for giving birth to her: “I didn’t consent to being here”

Show summary Hide summary

Can you really take your parents to court for bringing you into the world without asking first? One young American woman claimed she was doing exactly that, sparking outrage, confusion, and a flurry of online debate. But as the story unfolded, things turned out to be rather different from what people first believed.

The unusual complaint

The woman at the centre of the storm is Kass Theaz, a TikTok creator who told her followers she was filing a lawsuit against her parents. Her argument? She never gave her consent to be born. “I didn’t agree to be here,” she said in one video that quickly went viral.

While the statement sounds absurd at first glance, similar cases have made headlines before. In 2019, for instance, a man in India who described himself as antinatalist claimed he was suing his parents for bringing him into the world without permission. His reasoning was more philosophical, rooted in the belief that no one should impose life’s struggles on someone else without their say.

Kass’s case, however, seemed more pragmatic than ideological.

“I didn’t know I’d have to get a job”

In her TikTok posts, Kass explained that her frustration wasn’t existential but practical. “I didn’t know I’d have to grow up and find work just to survive,” she joked. “They didn’t even try to contact me before I was born to check if I wanted this.”

The tongue-in-cheek complaint left many viewers scratching their heads. Was she serious? Was this satire? Or a bizarre form of social commentary?

The debate only intensified when followers discovered that Kass had children of her own. Critics accused her of hypocrisy. She responded by clarifying: “I know I’ve said it’s unethical to have kids, but it’s different when you adopt. It’s not my fault they’re here—I’m just trying to help and be a good person.”

The twist—she never actually sued

It turns out, Kass never filed any lawsuit at all. The whole thing was a satirical skit. In an interview with the New York Post, she admitted she thought it was obvious she was joking. “I just assumed people would get the humour,” she said, adding that she was shocked by how many took her words literally.

For Kass, the episode revealed how quickly misinformation can spread online and how rarely people fact-check before reacting. “People get worked up over anything,” she noted.

When satire collides with reality

While Kass’s story was ultimately a parody, it tapped into a real cultural curiosity. Lawsuits over “wrongful birth” have indeed existed in some countries, most famously in France’s Perruche case in 2000. That ruling eventually led to legislation clarifying that no one can claim damages simply for having been born.

In other words, while Kass’s video was meant as a joke, the concept of questioning the ethics of birth has long been part of broader debates in philosophy, ethics, and even law.

A viral reminder

What began as a sarcastic TikTok post quickly spiralled into international headlines and heated online arguments. And though Kass never stood before a judge, she managed to prove something else entirely: in the world of viral content, people will believe almost anything if it’s packaged convincingly enough.

Perhaps the real lesson here isn’t about birth or consent, but about how we consume information—and how easily we can mistake satire for fact.
