Updated college football rankings: why the AP poll is wrong

Show summary Hide summary

The national conversation around college football rankings feels more chaotic than ever. Voters sitting in booths, game tapes ignored, and weekly flip-flops have left the AP Poll looking increasingly out of step with how teams actually perform on the field. Below is the ballot I would have submitted this weekend — built off preseason expectations but adjusted for what teams have shown so far.

My approach blends results, roster health, strength of schedule and on-field performance trends. I’m not simply rewarding reputation; I’m prioritizing teams that look like championship contenders right now.

How I compiled this week’s ballot and what mattered most

I started with preseason rankings as a baseline, then reweighted based on three core factors:

  • Recent game performance — not just wins and losses, but how teams moved the ball and defended in meaningful moments.
  • Quality of opponent — road wins and victories over ranked teams carry extra value.
  • Consistency and sustainability — coaching, quarterback play and depth to survive a long season.

Upsets matter, but so do context and trajectory. A slow-starting power team with upside will rank differently from a middle-of-the-pack club on a hot streak.

Top tier: Legitimate national title contenders

1 — Ohio State: returning champion still looks the part

Ohio State has the résumé of a defending champion. They started the season by beating last year’s preseason No. 1, and their identity has been built around a defense that consistently shuts down opponents. The offense hasn’t always been flashy, but the ground game is coming together and the Buckeyes look equipped to repeat the focus and discipline needed for a long postseason run.

2 — Miami: the Hurricanes’ resume demands respect

Miami has beaten quality opponents and done so convincingly at times. A road win at Notre Dame and a dominant showing against USF have signaled that this roster is deeper and more cohesive than recent iterations. With balanced play on both sides of the ball, the Hurricanes are legitimately in the title conversation.

3 — Georgia: grit and clutch moments keep them near the top

Some doubted Georgia before the season, but their resilience in close games — including an overtime escape in a hostile environment — reveals a veteran team that can lean on its defense and playmakers when it counts. The quarterback play has exceeded early expectations, and that combination of toughness and timely playmaking keeps Georgia in the elite group.

Contenders with questions: teams that could rise or fall

4 — Penn State: promising, but still searching for certainty

Penn State sits high partly because of preseason hope. The team has delivered wins, but I’m looking for sustained signs that they’re more than average — especially from Drew Allar. If the quarterback can consistently lead the offense against tougher opponents, Penn State will validate the hype. Their upcoming game with Oregon will be a real litmus test.

5 — Oregon: slow starts don’t erase ceiling

The Ducks showed some rust in a difficult road environment, but Dan Lanning’s track record with quarterbacks suggests Dante Moore will continue to improve. Oregon’s ceiling remains high; what matters now is consistency and whether they can turn flashes of offensive brilliance into week-to-week production.

6 — LSU: defensive backbone, offensive questions

LSU has picked up quality wins on paper, but I’m cautious about how those victories will age. The defense is elite, yet the offense under Brian Kelly has left too many doubts. The Tigers need a steadier attack before I’m comfortable slotting them higher in a deep field.

Round two: teams holding firm but not untouchable

7 — Florida State: exceeding expectations and building momentum

Florida State has outperformed preseason projections, and their balance on both sides of the ball has been impressive. A key matchup with Miami looms as a major indicator of whether the Seminoles belong in the playoff hunt; that October clash could reshape the ACC landscape.

8 — Oklahoma: defense excels, offense still a project

Oklahoma’s defensive identity is clear and impactful. The offense, however, remains a question mark for me. While the Sooners have handled their schedule, I want to see more consistent production through the air and fewer reliance-on-defense wins before moving them up.

9 — Texas A&M: potent offense, defense under scrutiny

A win at Notre Dame remains a significant resume boost for Texas A&M. The offense is the best it’s been in recent years, but the defense must improve to avoid late-game collapses. If the defense stabilizes, the Aggies could climb; if it doesn’t, they risk being undone despite offensive firepower.

10 — Illinois: a puncher’s chance and a disciplined identity

Bret Bielema’s program is playing tougher and smarter, earning them respect nationally. Illinois is the kind of team that can surprise opponents with physicality and game-planning. Whether they sustain that level against elite competition will determine if they belong in the playoff conversation.

Teams on the bubble and what to watch next

These programs all have arguments for cracking the top 10, depending on how the season unfolds:

  • Iowa State — effective offense in the Big 12; can they keep the momentum against tougher opponents?
  • Alabama — early missteps masked by an improving offense; defense will determine ceiling.
  • Texas — defense is elite, but quarterback play needs steadiness from Arch Manning.
  • Utah — physical and well-coached; their consistency in the Big 12 makes them dangerous.
  • Tennessee — one miscue against Georgia keeps them out of my top ten for now, but they remain a very dangerous team.

Each of these teams could be inside the top 10 within weeks if they win key matchups or demonstrate improved execution. Watch for the upcoming slate of conference battles — they’ll reveal which rosters are postseason-ready and which might fade under pressure.
