Why this mysterious 45-kg fish found on a beach has scientists intrigued

Show summary Hide summary

When a brightly coloured, tropical fish turns up on a chilly beach in the Pacific Northwest, you know something’s up. This isn’t just a quirky fish tale — it’s a story that’s got scientists genuinely puzzled, and maybe even a little concerned.

A surprise visitor from the deep

Picture it: you’re walking along a quiet beach in Oregon, waves gently rolling in, seagulls overhead… and suddenly you spot a massive, round fish gleaming with vibrant red-orange scales. Not exactly your typical day at the seaside.

That’s exactly what happened on 14 July 2021, when a 45-kilo opah – also known as a lampris royal or moonfish – washed up on the shores of Seaside, a small coastal town in the north-western United States. The appearance of this majestic creature, more at home in tropical and warm-temperate waters, has left marine biologists scratching their heads. What was it doing there?

Not your average beachcomber

The opah is a striking fish, not just for its size and vibrant colour, but also because of its unusual biology. It’s one of the few known warm-blooded fish – yes, really. While most fish are as cold as the water they swim in, the opah maintains a body temperature around 5°C higher than its surroundings, giving it a serious edge when it comes to power and endurance in the water.

Usually spotted off the coasts of California, the Mediterranean, or even French Polynesia, this particular opah was found much further north than expected. And that’s where things get interesting.

Climate change and curious currents

There’s growing suspicion that climate change could be behind this unexpected guest. As ocean temperatures rise, marine species are gradually shifting their ranges, sometimes by hundreds of kilometres. According to researchers at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it’s not unusual these days to see animals appearing in places they wouldn’t have dared venture a few decades ago.

In fact, while one opah was caught in Oregon back in 2009, sightings like these are still incredibly rare. Which is why Heidi Dewar, a biologist at NOAA, considers this latest find more than a fluke.

The fish was also found in remarkably good condition, suggesting it hadn’t drifted far post-mortem. It likely died close to shore, adding to the mystery of what brought it here in the first place.

The ocean’s great unknown

Despite its flashy appearance, the opah is still something of a scientific enigma. Research into its ecology and behaviour is surprisingly thin on the ground. There’s no solid data on global populations, and much of what we know stems from a handful of studies – including a 2015 paper that confirmed the opah’s warm-blooded status, a discovery that caused quite a stir in marine biology circles.

Why is it so poorly studied? Simply put, these fish tend to live deep underwater and far from coastlines, making them tricky to observe, let alone catch. So when one literally lands at your feet, scientists take notice.

From sea to science lab

Rather than being discarded, this unexpected specimen is now being put to good use. The local Seaside Aquarium plans to freeze the fish, preserving it for educational purposes. There’s even talk of it being dissected by schoolchildren during the upcoming school term – a rather dramatic introduction to marine biology, but one that might just inspire the next generation of ocean explorers.

While its appearance on a quiet Oregon beach may remain unexplained, this opah has certainly sparked conversations about changing ocean habitats, climate-driven migrations, and the need to better understand the creatures that call our seas home. Sometimes, nature throws us a curveball – and it’s up to us to pay attention.
