Group volunteers, gives back to Detroit Zoo

Twelve SVSU students took advantage of a fun approach to volunteering Saturday afternoon at the Detroit Zoo.
The event was offered by Student Life through their OrgSync page. Each semester Student Life holds various volunteer opportunities. Approximately three years ago, a volunteer trip to the Detroit Zoo took place and was successful. Student Life decided to offer it again this semester.
“The spots filled up within a few days, it seemed like students were excited about this opportunity,” Riley Hupfer, Student Life’s volunteer trip coordinator said. “I’m glad students are taking advantage of it and giving back to the community.”
The students spent five hours at the zoo to assist the park operations and landscaping staff with assorted activities such as construction of picnic tables.
“This is a one day volunteer event that gives students a chance to travel and give back to a different community,” said Hupfer.
The trip to the zoo was a way to get students more involved in service in a new atmosphere than what they’d typically expect.
“We would like for students to spend time in a new environment and increase their engagement in service,” said Katrina Friedeberg, associate director of Student Life. “And hopefully, have some fun while giving back to the community.”
Friedeberg said Student Life has an open door policy to its students and would love to hear of interesting ways students want to get involved in their community.
If you have a volunteer idea you’d like to share with Student Life, email Friedeberg at klfried1@svsu.edu or visit the Student Life office at Doan 105.
