Playoff bound, coach confident in players

Despite a loss to Wayne State this weekend, the Cardinals are heading to the playoffs for the first time in school history.

SVSU will be the second seed from the National College Lacrosse League Division 2 Midwest North Division in the national playoffs. The Cardinals, who finished 6-3 during the regular season, will face the University of Cincinnati in the first round next weekend in Cincinnati.

If SVSU wins, it will go on to play either Wayne State or Eastern Kentucky the following week in Amherst, MA.

SVSU qualified for the playoffs despite a 13-4 loss to the rival Wayne State Warriors Sunday afternoon.

Men’s lacrosse coach and instructor of English Jason Kahler said that a lack of offense plagued the Cardinals in the loss.

“Our defense, especially our six longsticks, played pretty well, but our offense never clicked,” he said.

Kahler said that despite the loss, a few players had solid performances for the Cardinals to build off for their upcoming playoff run.

“I was really impressed with the effort we got from (freshman) midfielder Tanner Beckwith,” Kahler said. “He seemed to always be on the field, making plays.
