The Saginaw Valley State University softball team has continued its strong play heading into the final weekend of the season. With the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament coming up, it is a great time for the team to get hot.
The team bettered its record after going 4-1 over the weekend against Tiffin University, Ohio Dominican and Wayne State, respectively.

The Saginaw Valley State University softball team has caught fire with the end of the season approaching, winning its last nine games.
“The team is coming together now and starting to play how we thought they would,” head coach Todd Buckingham said. “We had a lot of one-run losses early on, and we are turning that around now.”
The Lady Cardinal’s bats have caught fire recently, compiling 83 runs in their last nine wins. In addition, five of these games have ended early from the mercy rule.
“We have really gotten hot at the plate now that we have found a consistent lineup that is providing,” Buckingham added. “The girls are getting comfortable and confident in their roles.”

The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team has found consistency at the right time of the season, going 5-2-1 in its last seven games.
“Our season has been a bit of a roller coaster ride; we will play great baseball one day, and then turn around and not play so great,” head coach Chris Ebright said.
On Sunday, SVSU was swept by Hillsdale College on Cardinals Kids Club Day. Game one was a 5-4 loss, while game two ended in a 1-0 loss as the offense failed to get the big hit.

The Saginaw Valley Paintball Club team’s success has soared to new heights as it has shot to the top of the national rankings. The team is currently ranked fourth in the nation, putting it in position to enter the Division A National Collegiate Paintball Association (NCPA) National Championship.
“This has been the best year in the club’s history,” team leader senior Eric Madill said. “Our confidence has only continued to grow as we have gotten better.”
Experience has proven to be a major factor for a squad that returned all of its members from last year.
“Several of us played more over last summer and we all have been practicing every weekend,” Madill added.

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s tennis team finished its season with a weekend sweep consisting of dominating wins over Davenport University and Lawrence Tech University.
The Lady Cardinals headed to the Greater Midland Tennis Center on Sunday to take on Davenport University. Both teams came in with winning streaks, setting up for a grand finale for Saginaw Valley’s season. SVSU made the most of the opportunity, and claimed the victory with a score of 7-2.

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s golf team finished the weekend with consistency to earn sixth place in the SVSU Spring Invitational, hosted by SVSU at Boone Links Golf Course in Florence, Kentucky.
The team shot a combined score of 618 over the two days, with the single day scores of 309 on Saturday and Sunday. Lewis University claimed victory at the tournament with the team score of 602. The Cardinals tied for sixth with Ashland University, and were four strokes behind Lake Superior State University for fourth place.

The SVSU women’s tennis team claimed a pair of road victories this weekend with a 6-3 win over West Liberty and an 8-1 victory against Slippery Rock.
Against West Liberty, the team earned victories in two of the three double matches as well as four of the singles matches to earn the 6-3 overall victory.
Freshmen Danielle Slonac and Shea Donahue paired up for the third doubles match, earning a dominant win by the score of 8-1. Senior Meghan Woody and freshman Lauren Sharp were paired for the second doubles match of the day and earned the squad’s first doubles match of the day.

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s swimming and diving season officially came to an end this weekend as two of its members competed in the 2015 NCAA Division II National Swimming and Diving Championships.
Freshmen Rebeca Martinez and Katy Murphy made the journey to Indiana for the four-day event to represent the school for the first time at the National Championships.
Martinez participated in three events over the weekend, including the 200 Back, 200 IM and 400 IM. In the 200 Back Prelims, she finished 20th overall with a time of 2:03.81. She also placed 20th overall in the 400 IM Prelims with the time of 4:32.87, and 35th overall in the prelims for the 200 IM.

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team began its weekend play ranked 20th in the nation in the recent NABC poll. The team travelled north to Northern Michigan University to claim their 20th win of the season by the score of 82-72.
The Cardinal’s came out firing, hitting their first six 3-point attempts to claim the lead at 20-12 with under 14 minutes to play. Sophomore Caleb Davis got things going by making the first two, before junior Damon Bozeman nailed the next four.

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team capped off the weekend by defeating Northwood University by the score of 76-72 on Saturday.
Northwood started the game with a quick basket to take the lead, adding two more points before SVSU got on the board. Northwood would then go on a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 11-4.
The Cardinals quickly began to chip away at the lead to pull back into the game. With ten minutes remaining in the half, sophomore Caleb Davis hit a three to push Saginaw Valley into the lead at 16-15, kicking off a run leading to a ten point lead.
